How Your Clothes Help You Stand Out Within Your Industry

how to stand out in your industry

Imagine:

  • You are a coach or consultant; you must brand yourself and create authority, but you still need that extra something.
  • You have a job interview, and you know you’re one of dozens of applicants -- you will need that extra something.
  • You’re on camera a lot -- YouTube and other social media -- your personality is on point, you’re an expert in your field, but you still need that extra something.
  • You’re in a leadership position in a networking business; there are countless others doing and selling the same product as you. You need that extra something.

What is that extra something? What do you need in any of the previous scenarios, and hundreds of others, to really cinch and niche your style brand, command authority, and be remembered?

You need to stand out!

Standing out doesn’t mean being over-the-top, wearing things that draw attention to your ensemble alone in the hopes of Instagram likes. You’re talented, smart, and unique because you are YOU! The piece of the successful business model that so many entrepreneurs and professionals miss is that the clothes you wear can be the thing that elevates you, that extra something, the thing that makes you stand out.

Your clothes help you stand out when the colors reflect your beauty, not clash and distract.

When you wear the wrong colors, no one is looking at your face. That chartreuse sweater is not running your business, you are. When you’re spending your hard-earned cash on a branding photoshoot, you don’t want that bright yellow pineapple dress stealing attention away from your beautiful face. When potential employers see your profile photo on LinkedIn, you want them to remember your face, not be distracted by the tangerine blazer you’re wearing. I’ve talked about it before, and I’ll talk about it again: learning which colors complement your natural coloring is foundational to building a wardrobe that works for you, not on you. If you’re confused or overwhelmed by this concept, don’t worry; I’ve got you covered!

Your clothes help you stand out when they reflect your personality.

If you’re creative, and you love prints and taking risks with your ensembles, but you’re wearing a white tank, black blazer, and pearls in your branding photo shoot, then you, my friend, are experiencing unalignment. Here’s the reality: your clothes speak for you. What are your clothes saying to other people? If your clothes confuse people because they don’t match your personality, then it’s time for an update! Here’s a tip: ask your friends and loved ones to give you three words to describe your personality. Now, from that bank of words pick the top three -- the ones repeated the most, or the ones you feel most aligned to, the words that flatter and excite you the most. Now, do those three magic words align with the contents of your closet? Trust me, this exercise will give you a new perspective on your wardrobe.

Your clothes help you stand out when you feel confident and beautiful.

Confidence and beauty go hand-in-hand. If you feel confident, you feel beautiful, and vice versa. Don’t wear things that make you feel uncomfortable, frumpy, and basic! People can sense when you feel less than in some way, even through your photos. When your clothes boost your confidence, that self-assurance will ooze into other areas of your life. Your confidence will radiate to those around you, including clients, colleagues, and loved ones. You might not realize how powerful your clothing can be in elevating your life, but I’ve seen it with clients time and time again; it’s a revelation I want everyone to experience.
