Spring/Summer 2021 Color Trends: Which Ones to Wear and To Avoid

Have you ever wondered, “What is the point of color trends?” You’ve probably seen countless Pinterest pins or fashion blogs announcing these colors each season, but why does it matter?

Let’s talk through this…

Color trends reflect what’s happening in the world right now.

Color trends can be read as a kind of symbology, reflecting how we, collectively, feel, be it positive or negative. Trend colors help aid or distract from our collective emotions. It’s no new news that 2020 happened; we are all feeling the ill effects of the past year, and we could all use some positivity and freshness in Spring 2021. Color forecasters know this, and so they’ve created a palette that exudes optimism and energy.

Spring/Summer 2021’s palette is designed to help us heal and evolve from all the bad feelings dredged up in 2020. I’m loving the light airiness of this palette; it’s truly like a breath of fresh air.

Color trends give you an idea of what to expect when you’re shopping.

Manufacturers, designers, and retailers use color trend reports as a guiding tool when developing and selecting merchandise. Remember when Rose Gold was everywhere you looked? Or Miranda Priestly’s “cerulean” monologue in The Devil Wears Prada? If you pay attention, you’ll notice the same colors consistently, wherever you shop. When you know the color trends ahead of the season, you won’t be surprised and can even plan ahead.

Knowing color trends can help you decide, ahead of time, which ones you should wear.

Ok friend, here’s the reality: just like with other fashion trends, not every trendy color is for you. Just because it’s trending doesn’t mean you should necessarily wear it. Although it’s exciting to see all the new colors each season, the colors you wear, especially around your face, should complement your natural coloring. For example, if you’re blonde with light blue eyes, stay away from rust -- it will clash with your soft, light coloring and overpower you! But, ash green on a blue-eyed blonde? Yes, girl, that is your color alllll season.

What do you do when you love a color but it doesn’t look good on you?

This happens all the time, but don’t be bummed! If you love a trendy color, but it’s not doing you any favors, you can still utilize it in the following places:

  • Purses! - Purses are a great, utilitarian way to add a splash of color, liven your ensemble, and celebrate a new trend.
  • Nails! - Treat yourself to a manicure, by a professional or at home! Bonus - you’ll get to look at your nails and enjoy that fun color all the time rather than just on a top you only wear sporadically.
  • Watch bands! - Maybe you have a Fitbit or an Apple watch. Change out your watch band to express your color aspirations.
  • Shoes! - Wear that color you love … far, far away from your face! Wearing color trends on your feet is a great way to incorporate them into your wardrobe without distracting from your natural beauty.

Now you know why color trends are important and how you can play with them. Let’s talk, specifically, about which Spring 2021 colors work with which complexions and coloring. Color analysis is a major component of my work with clients. Your outfit can look amazing piece by piece, but if the colors don’t complement your natural beauty, you’ve got a clash on your hands (or, around your face). I want to help you avoid color clashes at your branding photoshoots, client meetings, and when you create a wardrobe to reflect your brand. Remember, you want clients to remember your face, and the right colors can help you achieve that.
